Republic result of collective efforts to build prosperous Nepal: PM Dahal

Kathmandu, May 28: Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ has said republic is the result of collective political efforts launched to build a prosperous Nepal where social justice prevails. 

It is the aspiration of change, PM Dahal said while addressing a special function organized at Army Pavilion, Tundikhel on the occasion of the Republic Day this morning.

“We, the political parties aspiring for change, established a republic with common efforts so that a discriminatory social structure was wiped out and federalism and new constitution achieved,” PM reminded, adding that it abolished the unitary and feudalistic dynasty rule.

According to him, a stage of political revolution was over with the establishment of federal democratic republic. He warned that any effort that tries to foil this achievement would not be successful. Dahal underlined the need for national cooperation and collaboration for the agenda of change.

“Historically, backsliding of system is not seen. Nepal moves ahead now. However, additional achievements are needed to substantiate inclusion, proportional representation and freedoms,” he opined.

According to him, country has been making a significant stride in people’s lifestyle. Government is firm on protecting national interest with independent and balanced foreign policy, PM Dahal added.

He further explained that the relations with neighbouring countries and international agencies were improved, thereby ensuring Nepal’s graduation to the status of developing countries by 2083BS. Campaigning is underway to achieve SDGs by 2087BS.

He also shared that financial and monetary policies were enforced in congruity to recover national economy from slowdown; necessary laws and polices revised to create investment atmosphere; state coffers utilized for people’s benefit; farmers’ rights addressed gradually; construction of infrastructures intensified; and efforts made for national unity to ensure self-reliant socialism.

Republic is not only a system but a lifestyle. It is getting established at civic level, Dahal stressed.

The special programme was attended by President, Vice President, Chief Justice, Speaker, Chairman of National Assembly, Deputy Prime Ministers, former prime ministers, ministers, and chiefs of diplomatic missions in the country.

The Nepal Army, Nepal Police and the Armed Police Force conducted march-past and cultural pageants on the occasion. A Nepal Army helicopter displayed a banner reading ‘Republic Day, 2081’ and cascaded flowers in Tundikhel.

Schools to remain closed for three days to avoid sweltering heat

Bardiya, May 28: Three local levels in Bardiya district have decided to close schools for three days owing to sweltering heat.

Badhaiyatal rural municipality, Gulariya municipality and Madhuvan municipality are closing the schools for three days from May 28 to avoid scorching heat.

Satish Yadav, chief of education section at Gulariya municipality, informed that they took a decision for schools closure citing the complaints from guardians, students and teachers that scorching heat had caused sheer discomfort in teaching learning activities. The municipal education committee held a meeting and took this decision.

Although teaching learning activities are halted, other administrative works would remain as usual, he added. 

Similarly, education supervisor at Madhuvan municipality, Khagendra Prasad Khanal, viewed the teaching learning could be continued in case of normal weather.

The rising temperature has caused patients’ flow in the district hospital and medical shops.

Medical superintendent at District Hospital, Dr Subash Pande, informed that growing number of patients have crowded the hospital; more beds are needed.

The rising temperature coupled with heat wave has caused illness among people.

Diarrhoea, skin disease, rashes and other infections are reported among the patients, Dr Pande added.

Republic a victory day of Nepali people: CM Kandel

Kakrebihar, May 28:  Chief Minister of Karnali Province, Yamlal Kandel, has extended a message of best wishes to all Nepali sisters and brothers on the occasion of the Republic Day, terming it a victory day.

He wished peace, prosperity and happiness to all Nepalis on this occasion. CM Kandel paid tribute to all known and unknown martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the achievement of federal republic.

The CM viewed entire people, civil society, political leaders and cadres had played their roles to usher the country into federal republic.  “Republic Day is the day the people become really sovereign”, he reminded, adding that it is a significant and unforgettable day in Nepali history.

The Day abolished the system where one could get supremacy by birth and brought changes which fostered inclusive and participatory system. Equality is major achievement of our republic, he underlined.

The CM underlined the need for strengthening the system to reap utmost benefits from it. Development should go together with it, Kandel viewed.

According to him, keeping in centre people’s will best serves social justice, good governance and prosperity.

Republic Day being celebrated today

Kathmandu, May 28: The 17th Republic Day is observing celebrated across the country today.

A Republic Day main celebration committee is holding a special function at Army Pavilion, Tundikhel. The Day is associated with people’s movement and aspiration for change.

All three tiers of government are conducting the programmes to commemorate the historic day. It is the day the country was declared a Republic.

The government has decided to observe the day for three days- from May 27 to 29. The government offices in the country and diplomatic missions abroad would conduct programmes along with illumination.

After then CPN Maoist’s armed conflict and seven parties’ peaceful movement, then King Gyanendra Shah had restored the House of Representatives (HoR) on April 24, 2006, thereby returning the rule to the people’s representatives. Two years later, the first meeting of the Constituent Assembly on May 28, 2008, declared the country a Republic.

The Republic Day main celebration committee has been formed under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ to celebrate the Republic Day, 2081 in a grand manner this year.

NC parliamentary party meeting at 10:00 am

Kathmandu, May 28: The major opposition Nepali Congress is holding its parliamentary party meeting to discuss pressing issues as annual budget and embezzlement of cooperatives’ funds.

NC Chief Whip Ramesh Lekhak informed that his party’s parliamentary party meeting was being held at 10:00am in the federal parliament building, Baneshwor.

The NC has been demanding the formation of a parliamentary probe committee on embezzlement of cooperative funds, where it argued, has the involvement of Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister Rabi Lamichhane.

The government is scheduled to present the annual budget in the parliament today. The NC is learnt to be discussing on it as well.

Govt unveiling annual budget today

Kathmandu, May 28: The government is unveiling the budget for the fiscal year, 2081/82 BS today.

Finance Minister Barshaman Pun is scheduled to present the budget in the joint sitting of the federal parliaments at 1:00pm today.

He is presenting the details on estimated annual spending and revenue, according to the parliament secretariat.

As per Article 119 of Constitution of Nepal, 2072, the government is obliged to present the annual budget in the joint meeting of the federal parliament.

Highway subsidence obstructs two-way traffic at Nawalparasi Purba  

Nawalpur, May 28: The East-West Highway subsided at Nawalparasi Purba last night, thereby obstructing the vehicular movement.

One of the busiest highways was depressed at Thumsi jungle of Gaidakot-9 at 2:00pm Tuesday, according to the District Police Office, Nawalparasi.

Deputy Superintendent of Police, Dev Bahadur Paudel informed that the two-way traffic was blocked owing to highway subsidence. Works are on to remove a truck trapped in the caved in road.

Similarly, eight passengers in a bus (Lu 1 kha 8413) heading to the east received minor injuries after the bus jerked with sudden brake handled to avoid road defect.

Efforts are underway to open the road for one way traffic, DSP Paudel added.

Republic culture need of hour: Info Minister Sharma

Kathmandu, May 28: Minister for Communications and Information Technology, Rekha Sharma, has said it is essential to strengthen republic system by developing it as a culture. Fostering republic values and characters is need of hour, she underlined.

Giving a message of best wishes on the occasion of the 17th Republic Day today, Minister Sharma viewed wrongdoing is not allowed in republic. This system must be flourished by ensuring equality where wrongdoer is not condoned, according to her.

She extended best wishes to all brothers and sisters on the occasion of the Republic Day and paid tribute to those who got martyrdom in various historic movements including people’s war.

“I pay deep respect to all those such as political leaders, cadres, civil society, general public, the ones gone disappeared and injured for their significant contributions to usher country to the present federal republic,” she said, reminding that it has been over 16 years the country became republic after the abolishment of 240-year-old monarchy.

She explained the historic achievements of the new system like federalism, inclusive and proportional representation and secularism. These historic and political gains need to be protected and republic system flourished accordingly.  

Minister Sharma argued that the republic has mainstreamed all castes, genders, and communities in state affairs as a transformation of country. A common responsibility for the country has been created to protect and promote national interest. The country’s independence and sovereignty have been bolstered, she reminded.

“Change in political system is people’s ambition for decades. Now, with the change in system, it is our responsibility to change people’s status,” Minister Sharma underlined. Leveraging the political achievements and proper utilization of available resources, time has come for us to build good governance, social justice and prosperity, thereby creating socialism, she reiterated.
