‘Nepal committed for promoting social justice’

Kathmandu, June 12: Minister for Labour, Employment and Social Security Dol Prasad Aryal expressed Nepal’s commitment towards promoting social justice.

In his address to the 112th session of the International Labour Conference organized in Geneva on Tuesday, Minister Aryal reaffirmed commitment to implement the agenda of mobilizing labourers in decent work.

Minister Aryal shared Nepal’s experience, achievements and reforms in addressing labour-related problems and implementation of relevant laws , according to the Permanent Mission of Nepal to the United Nations in Geneva.

On the occasion, Minister had a meeting with Minister of Human Resources of Malaysia Chee Keong SIM on the sidelines of the conference on Tuesday.

Issues relating to fostering safe working environment for Nepali migrant workers and strengthening cooperation in enhancing the skills of workers were discussed during the meeting.

Likewise, Minister Aryal had a meeting with Minister of Labour of Qatar Ali Samikh Al Marri on the sidelines of the conference same day. The two ministers discussed the ways to strengthening bilateral cooperation in addressing the problems and improving the working conditions for Nepali workers. 

Minister Aryal will join the Nepali delegation led by President Ramchandra Paudel on June 12-13 and return home on June 14.

02-       World Cup Cricket: non-stop rain delays Nepal-Sri Lanka match

Kathmandu, June 12: Toss has been delayed in the match between Nepal and Sri Lanka under the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Cricket tournament due to non-stop rain.

The toss was delayed due to rain at the Broard County Stadium in Florida this morning, the ICC said.

Today’s match is considered important for both the teams. Nepal who lost first of the four matches in the group stage, is looking to win the second match,.

Likewise, Sri Lanka who lost both their previous matches is under pressure to win today’s match to make it to the last eight.

Nepal and Sri Lanka are going to face each other for the first time in the senior cricket tournament.

Nepal lost to the Netherlands by six wickets in the first match of the group stage while Sri Lanka suffered a defeat to South Africa by six wickets in the first match and Bangladesh by two wickets in the second match.

After today’s match, the Nepali team will go to the West Indies to play remaining two matches of the group stage. Nepal will play against South Africa on June 14 and Bangladesh on June 16 in St. Vincent, West Indies.

03-       Monsoon arrival to Kathmandu to take a few days

Kathmandu, June 12: It will take a few days for the monsoon to enter the Kathmandu Valley.

Currently there is an influence of the monsoon system in the eastern part of the country and the local and western winds as well as low pressure system formed around Bihar in remaining part of the country.

Meteorologist at the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology Sanjeev Adhikari said there slim chances of rain in the Kathmandu Valley today.

The maximum temperature is expected to remain in between 32 and 34 degrees Celsius. The weather will be partly to generally cloudy in the hilly regions of the country including Sudurpaschim, Karnali and Koshi provinces and fair in the rest of the country.

Light rain is also taking place at one or two places of Koshi province. The weather will be partly to generally cloudy in the hilly regions of Bagmati and Gandaki provinces and mainly fair in the rest of the country this afternoon.

Light to moderate rain with thunder and lightning is likely to occur at some places of the hilly regions of Koshi, Bagmati and Gandaki provinces.

The Meteorological Forecasting Division has predicted partly to generally cloudy in the hilly regions of Koshi and Gandaki provinces and partly fair in the rest of the country tonight.

Light to moderate rain accompanied by thunder and lightning is likely to occur at some places of the hilly regions of Koshi and Gandaki provinces. The maximum temperature is expected to hover between 32 and 34 degrees Celsius.

04-       President Paudel leaves Doha for Geneva this morning

Kathmandu, June 12: President Ramchandra Paudel has left the capital city of Qatar, Doha, this morning for Geneva in course of attending the 112th session of the International Labour Conference there.

Ambassador of Nepal to Qatar Naresh Bikram Dhakal, Qatari Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Nepali embassy staff saw off the President-led delegation at Hamad International Airport on Tuesday night, President’s press advisor Kiran Pokharel told RSS.

President Paudel is scheduled to hold bilateral talks with President of the Swiss Confederation Viola Amherd today, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. On Thursday, he will address the inaugural session of the Global Coalition Forum for Social Justice

Director General of the International Labour Organization (ILO) Gilbert F. Houngbo is scheduled to pay a courtesy call on President Paudel tomorrow. President Paudel is scheduled to leave Geneva for Berlin on June 15.

President Paudel is on an official visit to Germany at the invitation of the German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier. He will hold formal talks with his German counterpart on June 17.

During his stay there, President Paudel is scheduled to visit the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research Institute, German Research for Geo-Science and Telegraph Feinberg Campus.

He is also scheduled to visit the Cecilienhof and Sansoussi Palace Gardens and Museum.

The Non-Resident Nepali Association (NRNA), Germany is scheduled to felicitate President Paudel on July 16. At the same programme, he will address Nepalis living in Germany. Similarly, the President is scheduled to meet industrialists and businessmen associated with Germany’s Trade and Investment on June 17.

President Paudel is scheduled to return to Kathmandu on June 19.

05-       Nepal-Sri Lanka match cancelled due to rain

Kathmandu, June 12: The scheduled match between Nepal and Sri Lanka under the ICC T20 World Cup Cricket Tournament has been cancelled due to rain.

The match was scheduled to start at 5:15 am today at the Broard County Ground in Florida, but the match was canceled due to continuous rain. With the cancellation of the match, both the teams shared one point each.

In the World Cup, Nepal has one point from two matches while Sri Lanka has one point from three matches. There are chances for Nepal to enter the next phase of tournament.

06-       International tourism fair in Kathmandu from Friday onward

Kathmandu, June 12: An international tourism fair is taking place in Kathmandu from Friday so as to promote tourism of the country at international level. The fair is to take place on the participation of tourism entrepreneurs from 16 countries.

More than 150 stalls of businessmen from 16 countries will be displayed in the fair to be organized by Summit Event and Market, said Bishnu Pandey, proprietor of the organization.

“We believe that the fair will help in sustainable tourism development and cultural exchange in the country,” he said.

Nepal, India, Korea, Taiwan, Singapore, Maldives, USA, Netherlands, Sri Lanka, China, Thailand, Dubai, Bangladesh, Vietnam, Malaysia and Bhutan will participate in the fair. Similarly, stalls of all seven provinces will also be displayed in the fair. Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) and Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) have extended support to the fair to be held at Bhrikutimandap.  —
