Priority to new education act: Education Minister Bhattarai

Kathmandu, July 16: The newly appointed Minister for Education, Science and Technology, Bidya Bhattarai, has said making new education act was her priority.

Assuming the office at Singha Durbar on Monday, Minister Bhattarai said the bill designed to make education act which is under discussion in the parliament would be forwarded soon.

She made the first decision on enforcement of nutrition development programme in school based on local need.

Similarly, the Minister decided to form a committee coordinated by a joint secretary for the effective enforcement of budget for the coming fiscal year.

Bhattarai said, “Community schools lack quality education. My responsibility will be to restore attraction to community school.”

Similarly, the Minister stressed on enforcement of educational calendar in university. She reminded why university education was not retaining students. “Time has come for universities to pay heed on retaining its products within country, for which I will work devotedly,” Bhattarai added.

Bhattarai represents the CPN UML.

She had joined politics from students’ movement of 2046BS. She also worked as a chief of women department of ANNFSU in 2050BS.

Bhattarai was elected as a member of the House of Representatives in the by poll held after her husband Rabindra Adhikari died in a helicopter crash in 2075BS. She was also elected HoR member from Kaski in 2079BS general election.

Earlier, she was a permanent teacher at Ratna Rajya Campus.

Time to resolve problems relating to Melamchi project: Minister Yadav

Kathmandu, July 16: The newly appointed Minister for Drinking Water, Pradip Yadav, has said he would devote to resolving problems relating to Melamchi Drinking Water Project.

Sustainable solution of problems on this project is essential, he underlined while assuming the office in Singha Durbar on Monday.

Minister Yadav reiterated it is necessary to ensure drinking water from the Melamchi Project throughout the year. “The Melamchi Project is almost closed now, while we see shortage of drinking water in the Kathmandu Valley,” the Minister said, assuring the ministry officials of adequate budget management.

He also reminded that climate change had worsened the problems of drinking water like receding underground water table and drying up of sources. This problem has been acute in Tarai districts as well. It needs collective actions, the Minister stressed.

Tourism policy will be made timely: Minister Pande

Kathmandu, July 16: The newly appointed Minister for Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation, Badri Pande, has said tourism policy would be made timely so that it would contribute to development of tourism sector.

The programmes would be launched to attract more number of tourists by exploring tourism potentials through new policy, he vowed, while assuming the office in Singha Durbar on Monday.

He also formed a taskforce under the coordination of a joint secretary at ministry for making timely policy.

Minister Pande believed that country would see tourism development as national politics has made headway to stability. Similarly, the tourism dented by the COVID-19 pandemic, is gradually coming out of crisis. Formulation and enforcement of effective strategy to achieve targets on tourism is equally imperative, according to him.

He also expected cooperation from the employees because they are the permanent government.

Similarly, the Minister viewed culture is the essence of country, so it needs proper attention and protection.

The Minister signed in a decision on formation of a taskforce on study and suggestion to make Tourism Policy, 2065 contextual. The taskforce is coordinated by Joint Secretary Hemraj Tamang at the ministry.

Effective operation of international airports and of national flag carrier would help boost tourism, the Minister reminded.

Minister Pande is the 41st Tourism Minister of the country. The ministry was first instituted in 2034BS having Dr Harka Gurung as Minister of State for Tourism.

Minister Pande born in Bajura district in 2030BS is a Nepali Congress lawmaker elected from constituency no 1 of Bajura in the 2079BS general election.

He is in politics since 2043BS with his affiliation to Nepali Congress. Pande has worked in various capacities in the party since student politics.

He has done MA in Political Science from the Tribhuvan University.
