Prosperity through sports sector: Minister Bishwokarma

Kathmandu, Aug 30: Minister for Youth and Sports, Jagat Bahadur Bishwokarma, has clarified that a new bill related to sports has been brought to address the problems surfaced in sports sector as well as to take sports sector to a new height.

Minister Bishworkarma said, “The government has set priority to achieve prosperity through the medium of sports. It is necessary to promote sports sector to make country’s pride high.”

Responding to queries in the meeting of Education and Health Sector Committee under the House of Representatives on Friday, he expressed the belief that the bill would make performances of Sports Council more effective.

The Sports Minister expressed commitment to keep sports above the political interest.

Presenting the amendment on the bill, Committee member Divyamani Rajbhandari, suggested to make sports authority in place of sports council as well as executive director in place of vice-chairperson.

Similarly, another member Bimala Bishwokarma demanded to increase ambit of action against the players involved in match fixing.

The proposed bill has made provision of one year imprisonment and up to Rs 100,000 fine against a player involved in match fixing.

Another committee member Jeevanram Shrestha stressed the need of increasing investment for further development and expansion of the sports sector. The bill has already been passed from the National Assembly.
