International Conference on Protection of Rights of the Migrant Workers begins

Kathmandu: The International Conference on the Protection of the Rights of Migrant Workers kicked off here today.

The main objective of the event is to seek ways for the protection of migrant workers and solutions to issues facing them through dialogues and cooperation among the trans-national government and non-government organisations.

Management of migrant workers, migration-related administration, clean and accountable recruitment process, problems related to illegal migration and human trafficking, security of women migrant workers and challenges towards that end, accountability of business and human rights and accessibility of justice are agenda of discussions during the three-day event.

The Conference is expected to be helpful in making migration safer, further secured and systematic through combined efforts. It will conclude by issuing the Kathmandu Declaration and the Action Plan as well.

Vice President Nanda Bahadur Pun inaugurated the Conference amidst a programme.

Representatives from Global Network for Human Rights and several organisations based in labour force receiving and supplying countries are taking part in the event. It has the participation of over 62 representatives from 30 countries, the National Human Rights Commission said.

The Conference funded by the Nepal Government is supported by the International Labour Organisation, International Organisation of Migration and the United Nations Development Programme ( UNDP).
