Kathmandu, Dec 11, 2019 : The nation observed 16-day campaign against Violence against Women by carrying out various activities from November 25 to December 10.
However, on the contrary, 58 incidents of VAW took place against women and children during the campaign period. According to a report released by the Informal Sector Services Centre (INSEC) here today, 25 women and 33 children suffered violence during the period.
Accordingly, more than two women and child suffered violence every day. During the period, 27 women and children were sexually assaulted while 10 children including a four-year-old girl were sexually abused. Six women suffered from attempt to rape incident.
Three women and a girl child were killed by family members while a woman died in a menstruation hut in Accham. The reports states that the gender-based violence against women and children, including murder is on the rise.
A culture of impunity, gender stereotype and lack of gender-friendly judicial system, among others is contributing to a rise in VAW, states the INSEC.
